Before you read the text below, please read about
Medical education and training.

The County Council of Östergötland has about 390 positions for specialist training (ST). Specialisation is possible in a variety of subjects. Clinical departments appoint applicants to ST positions independently. All specialist training programmes have their own programme directors. Training is competence based, however a minimum training of five years is required before you can apply for a specialist certificate which is issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).

The county council's office for postgraduate medical education (Studierektorskansliet) is responsible for coordination of the various specialist training programmes. It also provides courses in genereal competence areas such as communication skills, leadership, educational skills and medical ethics. Even the county council's International Office is part of the office office for postgraduate medical education.
