KMC – Centre for Teaching and Research in Disaster Medicine & Traumatology, have trained Kronoberg County in south Sweden in the management of major incidents as well as in staff procedure skills.
The project consisted of different trainings and exercises, both at home (team management), and also at KMC (disaster management) and has been going on for more than a year. The contingence plan has meanwhile undergone a revision and March 17 was a follow-up major simulation exercise at home with the county’s own management group acting in their own situation rooms.
The exercise was organized in cooperation between the KMC and the Kronoberg County Council's safety and emergency unit.
For the exercise Emergo Train System was used. With Emergo Train System it is possible to link available resources and management decisions to the measured outcome of the patients. The scenario was a railroad crossing accident where high-speed train X2000 hit a truck on a railroad crossing. The train had a lot of passengers, many were seriously injured in the accident. The exercise was run in ’real-time’.
The hospitals was set up with the staff and resources that were available on the day of training. Ambulance, rescue and police resources were also set up according to real resources.
A total of 60 people from co-operating authorities and the county council’s own hospitals in Växjö and Ljungby were involved in the exercise.
Also the Designated duty officers in neighbouring county council’s was involved in the exercise since the injured patients were distributed to several of the hospitals in southern Sweden.
